Gordon in Orvieto 20th Anniversary Exhibit
August 25–October 13, 2018
Submission deadline: June 30, 2018
An exemplum (Latin for "example", pl. exempla, exempli gratia = "for example", abbr.: e.g.) is a moral anecdote, brief or extended, real or fictitious, used to illustrate a point. The word is also used to express an action performed by another and used as an example or model. - wiki
Historically, exempla are more commonly understood in literary terms. Yet, the visual tradition that is experienced in places like Orvieto and throughout Italy in churches and public institutions is equally compelling. Think of the Sistine Chapel, the Scrovegni Chapel, and the Chapel of the Corporal in the Duomo. They are covered with visual narratives which served as examples that could be read, cross-referenced and used to instruct, challenge and encourage those who were present. They might even speak today if we are prepared to look. The Orvieto program emphasizes and truly celebrates context and encounter for art. We took exempla as a conceptual hinge since the possibility emerged to gather twenty years worth of work from a wide range of people all of whom shared time in this place in common. The show will be filled with the exempla which have the possibility to speak in a new, re-situated context.

Loan Agreement Form
You will have to submit a signed copy of Gordon College’s Loan Agreement Form before shipping any work to the gallery. This is mandatory, as it allows us to insure the work while on display. Images of Artwork
Please provide a print-quality photograph (saved as a jpeg) of each artwork submitted, so we can include it on the website and potentially use it to make promotional posters or invitation postcards. The images should be high-resolution (file dimensions of at least 2000 pixels on the short end) and should be sharply focused and cropped to the edges of the artwork/frame. If your file is smaller than 2-3 mb, it’s probably not high-resolution enough for us to use. If you don’t have any better photos, send us whatever you have.
Send these as attachments to both of the following email addresses:
